There are tons of different ways that you can honor those who served on Memorial Day weekend in North Carolina, but these are some of our favorite 2016 Memorial Day Events in Jacksonville NC and the surrounding area that we think you should take the time to check out.
Battleship NC Memorial Day Observance in 2016
The Battleship NC Memorial Day Observance draws in people throughout the entirety of North Carolina to pay their respects to those who have served and sacrificed everything for our country. The ceremony is held on the deck of the USS North Carolina beginning at 5:45 p.m. on May 30, 2016. The free to attend ceremony will include musical arrangements, a guest speaker, an all-service Color Guard, a 21-gun salute, and the casting of a memorial wreath into the water. If you’re in the area or want to take the drive, we highly recommend seeing this incredibly moving ceremony.
The I Run to Remember race in Jacksonville NC is a great way to remember someone who is serving or has served in the military. One thing that we really appreciate is that it allows for even the busiest person to make time, since you can choose to run your own route anytime between May 22 and June 4 — or even in another race in the area. You can wear the bib from this event to another race, or you can track your route to verify your participation with one of the approved apps. You can dedicate your run to a member of the military, and the organizers will send you a medal with their name engraved on it. All proceeds will go to the Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Commission.
Military Appreciation Day 2016 in Swansboro NC
Even though the annual Military Appreciation Day occurs after Memorial Day, it is still one of our favorite ways to honor those who have served. The Jacksonville and Swansboro areas contain many members of the US Military, and this is a chance for them to go out and have fun with their families. Food, games, educational exhibits and more will be present for families to enjoy together. The event runs from 10am to 4pm on June 4, 2016 at the Hammocks Beach State Park in Swansboro NC.
