Best ways to share the road with motorcyclists this summer

As the summer starts, more and more motorcycles take over the road ways. If you are driving on a highway, and there is a motorcycle rider by you, you may not know what to do to keep them and yourself as safe as possible. Here are some tips for how to stay safe while driving around motorcycles this summer.

A motorcyclist has just as much right to a space in a lane as you do. Even though they take up less space, drivers should never use the excess space left by a motorcyclist as a separate lane or encroach on that space in any manner. Provide the cyclist with a decent amount of space between the back of their bike and the front of your vehicle. This gives you time to react and makes certain that the rider remains in your sightline, so you can see what they are doing. If they are behind you, remain conscious of that fact, and check your blind spot to make sure they haven’t moved around you. Staying vigilant and not driving distracted can be a life saver for a motorcycle rider.
