The United States Marine Corps was founded on Nov. 10, 1775 thought a resolution by a session of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. The Marine Corps started celebrating its birthday in 1921 under the Commandant John J. Lejeune. Lejeune is the namesake for the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune here in Jacksonville. Marines and sailors at Camp Lejeune held a daytime ceremony Wednesday at Liversedge Field. The birthday festivities will be continuing in the coming weeks as individual units celebrate by throwing their own birthday balls.

Veterans Day is also an important day especially in a city so heavily populated by service members. Here in Jacksonville, a local veteran’s organization will hold a special ceremony in honor of Veterans Day. The ceremony will take place at 300 Sherwood Drive in Jacksonville. It is a celebration of all veterans, anyone who has ever worn the nation’s uniform. The event will include a reading of a poem, music by the 2nd Marine Division brass quintet, a performance of ‘America the Beautiful’ by a guest soloist and retired Marine Corps Maj. James Capers as the guest speaker. There will also be a reception after the ceremony.

This week, more than usually, it is important to recognize those who have and are currently serving our country. If you want to support the troops, consider participating in the various fundraisers Sanders Ford has each year, like the Home for Our Troops Fundraiser or the Drive for Troops. Check back often to see what community events are taking place in Jacksonville.
